The Harley-Davidson motorcycle is an American icon.  Over the past 100 years, it has become one of the most recognizable brand names in the world. So it’s no surprise the Smithsonian Institution is home to one of its earliest models. But what is surprising is how much the Harley has changed. This first-generation motorcycle has only five horsepower; it’s a lightweight compared to today’s more muscular versions.

How did this 90-pound weakling grow into a 900-pound American icon? And is its distinctive sound the reason for its success?

Museum Secrets goes to the Better Brain Center in Alexandria, Virginia, with Smithsonian curator Paul Johnston, to test his brain’s responses to the rumble of a Harley-Davidson and other motorcycles.
